Starlink debuts upgraded mobile satellite internet with enhanced functionality
Starlink Mobile launches upgraded Direct-to-Cell service for video, voice and messaging in remote areas amid SpaceX IPO buzz.
Starlink, the satellite internet division of SpaceX, has announced the launch of its upgraded mobile service, Starlink Mobile. The new service aims to deliver enhanced connectivity by enabling video calls, voice, messaging, and data access in areas where terrestrial networks are unavailable. This advancement marks a significant step forward for mobile satellite internet technology.
Starlink Mobile Introduces Advanced Features

Starlink Mobile, formerly known as Direct to Cell, now integrates with Grok, an AI assistant developed by xAI, another company founded by Elon Musk. The integration allows users to upload images, enabling precise location identification and providing contextual details about their surroundings. Additionally, the upgraded service supports video calls from high-altitude or remote locations with limited or no traditional network coverage.
With a constellation of 650 low-Earth orbit satellites, Starlink Mobile provides data, voice, video, and messaging services across six continents. According to Starlink, these services are now available to over 1.7 billion people worldwide. The company’s next-generation satellites aim to expand these offerings by providing broadband connectivity directly to mobile phones. As noted on Starlink’s website, the service now accommodates data usage across more than 40 apps and 100 devices, with future plans to support streaming, email, and other applications.
Currently, voice services are limited to specific apps, but Starlink intends to introduce features like native calling and the capability to handle large files and videos in the future.
Speculation Surrounding SpaceX IPO

The launch of Starlink Mobile comes amid mounting speculation about SpaceX’s potential plans for an initial public offering (IPO). Reports suggest SpaceX might file confidentially for an IPO valued at over $1.75 trillion. According to Bloomberg News, the filing could happen as early as March. If these plans materialize, the IPO would surpass previous records, potentially becoming the largest in history.
Starlink’s satellite internet services have been a significant revenue driver for SpaceX. Estimates from Payload Space indicate that Starlink’s revenue rose from approximately $1.9 billion in 2022 to $4.2 billion in 2023 and reached about $8.2 billion in 2024. In December, multiple media outlets reported that SpaceX was considering going public with a valuation of around $1.5 trillion.
A Transformative Offering
Starlink Mobile’s advancements promise to reshape mobile connectivity for people in remote or underserved areas. By integrating cutting-edge AI and expanding satellite capabilities, the service sets a new standard for satellite-based internet technology. As SpaceX continues to make strides, the prospect of a historic IPO further underscores the company’s growing influence in the technology and space sectors.
