Starlink partners with UIDAI for Indian market expansion
UIDAI has onboarded Starlink for Aadhaar e-KYC to verify Indian subscribers, enabling onboarding of about 20 lakh users.
Elon Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, is making significant strides in its Indian operations by integrating Aadhaar authentication for customer verification. This development, confirmed in an official statement, follows the government’s approval for Starlink to provide satellite-based broadband services in India.
"The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has onboarded satellite-based internet provider Starlink Satellite Communication Pvt Ltd. Starlink will use Aadhaar Authentication for customer verification, which will make the entire process smooth, secure and very easy", the statement noted.
Aadhaar e-KYC to streamline onboarding
To simplify and secure the onboarding process for customers, Starlink will leverage Aadhaar-based e-KYC verification. This collaboration aims to ensure compliance with India’s regulatory framework while providing seamless access to high-speed satellite internet for households, businesses, and other institutions.
"Starlink’s onboarding with Aadhaar authentication signifies a powerful synergy: India’s trusted digital identity joining hands with global satellite technology. Aadhaar e-KYC will facilitate the onboarding of users seamlessly, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements while delivering high-speed internet to households, businesses, and institutions", the statement added.
Expanding reach with scalability
According to official estimates, Starlink’s infrastructure has the capacity to onboard approximately 20 lakh customers in India. This milestone signals the company’s readiness to meet the growing demand for reliable internet connectivity across the country, particularly in underserved or remote regions.
Key partnerships and authorization
The partnership with UIDAI makes Starlink an authorized sub-authentication user agency and sub-eKYC user agency. This appointment was formalized in the presence of key officials, including UIDAI CEO Bhuvnesh Kumar, UIDAI Deputy Director General Manish Bhardwaj, and Starlink India Director Parnil Urdhwareshe.
Additionally, Starlink has collaborated with major telecom players Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio to distribute its services in the Indian market. These partnerships are expected to bolster its efforts to deliver satellite-based broadband services to a wider audience.
With this strategic collaboration, Starlink is poised to enhance digital connectivity in India, bridging gaps and offering its state-of-the-art satellite technology to millions of potential users.
