SpaceX set to launch Starlink satellites from California on Jan 2

SpaceX is preparing for another milestone in its ongoing efforts to expand internet connectivity through its Starlink satellite program. The company planned to launch a batch of Starlink internet satellites into low-earth orbit on Friday, January 2, 2026, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Mission Timing and Details

The launch, utilizing SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket, was scheduled for 6:09 p.m. PT. In the event of unforeseen delays, an alternate launch opportunity was set for January 3 at the same time.

This mission involves the Falcon 9’s 21st flight for the first stage booster. Following the stage separation, SpaceX intended for the rocket’s first stage to return and land at Vandenberg Space Force Base, showcasing the reusability of its orbital-class rocket.

Starlink

According to SpaceX, Starlink is "the world's first and largest satellite constellation using a low Earth orbit to deliver broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls and more." The satellites orbit Earth at an altitude of approximately 550 kilometers (341 3/4 miles) and connect to antennas set up by users for internet access.

The Falcon 9 Rocket

SpaceX describes Falcon 9 as a "reusable, two-stage rocket designed and manufactured by SpaceX for the reliable and safe transport of people and payloads into Earth orbit and beyond." It is notable as the world’s first orbital-class reusable rocket, a key feature that significantly reduces the cost of accessing space.
