SpaceX Schedules Initial Rocket Launch of 2026 from Florida

SpaceX is set to commence the new year with a Falcon 9 rocket launch from Florida, marking the company’s first mission of 2026. After achieving a record-breaking 109 launches from the Space Coast in 2025, SpaceX shows no signs of slowing down as it prepares for another ambitious year.

Launch Details and Mission Objectives

The Falcon 9 rocket is scheduled to lift off from Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station during the early hours of Sunday, January 4. According to SpaceX, the launch window will span from midnight to 3:17 a.m., and the mission will deploy 29 Starlink internet satellites into orbit. Known as "Starlink 6-88", the mission will involve the rocket flying southeast, offering spectators south of the Cape a chance to witness a striking nighttime launch.

Reflecting on a Record-Breaking Year

For both SpaceX and Florida’s Space Coast, 2025 was a groundbreaking year. Of the 109 launches achieved from Florida, 101 originated from SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rockets, solidifying the company’s dominance in the region. The final Florida launch of 2025 occurred on December 17, capping what was a highly active year for the area’s space industry. As 2026 begins, it remains to be seen whether SpaceX will surpass their previous records.

Temporary Shift from Kennedy Space Center

Meanwhile, launches from Pad 39A at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center are on hold as SpaceX focuses on preparing the site for future Starship operations. Kiko Dontchev, SpaceX VP of Launch, confirmed this development on X, stating, "Worth noting that SL6-99 was also our last single stick from 39A for some time as we put full focus on Falcon Heavy launches and ramping Starship from the Cape!" SpaceX’s efforts are aimed at adapting 39A for its Starship program, a fully reusable launch system that has been selected by NASA to deliver the Artemis III crew to the lunar surface by 2028.

Starship test flights have been ongoing at SpaceX’s Texas site, but the company recently received approval to expand its Florida operations for Starship launches. Construction at Pad 39A remains underway as SpaceX works toward launching the massive rocket from the Cape.

Future Launch Prospects

While SpaceX focuses on Starship development, fans of Falcon Heavy launches are left wondering when the next triple-booster rocket will take flight. The last Falcon Heavy launch from Florida occurred in October 2024, when it carried NASA’s Europa Clipper mission into space. The company has not yet announced a timeline for its next Falcon Heavy launch.
