SpaceX Breaks Annual Launch Record With 165 Orbital Flights in 2025

SpaceX set a new single-year launch record in 2025 with 165 Falcon 9 orbital flights, mostly Starlink launches.

SpaceX Breaks Annual Launch Record With 165 Orbital Flights in 2025

SpaceX has set a new standard for orbital launches in a single year, clocking an extraordinary 165 missions in 2025. This milestone caps another record-breaking year for Elon Musk's aerospace company, marking the sixth consecutive year of surpassing its annual launch totals. For context, SpaceX has leaped from 25 launches in 2020 to an astonishing 165 in just five years, a cadence that is leaving competitors far behind.

A Dominating Presence in Global Spaceflight

The sheer scale of SpaceX's operations in 2025 is staggering. The company accounted for approximately 85% of all orbital launches from the United States this year. Globally, it nearly doubled the number of missions conducted by China, solidifying its dominance in the arena of spaceflight. All 165 orbital missions were achieved using the reusable Falcon 9 rocket, a workhorse that has been central to the company’s success.

The company also conducted five non-orbital test flights of its next-generation Starship rocket, designed as a fully reusable and powerful spacecraft aimed at future deep-space missions.

Falcon 9: A Record-Setting Workhorse

Among the highlights of the year was SpaceX pushing the operational limits of its Falcon 9 boosters. The rockets returned to Earth successfully in all but three instances. Two of these exceptions involved missions carrying Spainsat NG communications satellites to geostationary transfer orbit in January and October, where the heavy payloads left insufficient fuel for the boosters to land.

The third exception occurred on March 3, during a Starlink satellite mission. Although the booster initially landed on a drone ship, it ultimately tipped over after a fire damaged one of its landing legs. Despite these rare setbacks, SpaceX achieved its 500th rocket landing and its 500th launch of a reused booster this year, underlining the operational reliability of its reusable systems.

Starlink

Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet constellation, dominated the company’s launch manifest in 2025. Of the 165 missions, 123 were devoted to deploying Starlink satellites, collectively deploying over 3,000 new spacecraft into orbit. With more than 9,300 active satellites now in the Starlink megaconstellation, SpaceX’s presence in low Earth orbit continues to grow at an unprecedented rate.

Starship Tests Show Promise

While the Falcon 9 carried the bulk of the workload, the Starship rocket made notable contributions this year as well. SpaceX conducted five suborbital Starship test flights in 2025, and while the first three lost at least one stage of the rocket, the final two flights in August and October achieved full success. This progress sets the stage for more ambitious Starship milestones in 2026, potentially including its first orbital flight and even an uncrewed mission to Mars, should timelines align.

A Year of Unprecedented Achievements

SpaceX’s achievements extend beyond the sheer volume of launches. Milestones such as hitting 500 rocket landings and pushing Falcon 9 reusability to 32 flights for a single booster underscore the company’s continued innovation in aerospace technology.

With its record-breaking 165 orbital flights in 2025, SpaceX has once again demonstrated its unmatched capability in commercial spaceflight. Looking ahead, the company’s ambitions for Starship development and its potential role in interplanetary exploration promise to keep SpaceX at the forefront of space exploration for years to come.
