SpaceX Achieves 10,000-Satellite Launch Milestone

SpaceX has reached a significant milestone in its ambitious satellite program, surpassing the launch of 10,000 satellites into Earth's orbit. The achievement came after two Falcon 9 rockets successfully deployed 56 Starlink satellites - 28 from each launch site in Florida and California.

The company announced the accomplishment in a tweet, confirming the total number of Starlink satellites launched to date has exceeded 10,000. Starlink, a subsidiary of SpaceX, operates a high-speed internet service using its growing network of low Earth orbit satellites.

A Steady Path to a Global Satellite Network

Starlink has been steadily building its constellation since its first launches in 2018, when test satellites were deployed, followed by the launch of 60 operational satellites the next year. Since then, the company has consistently added to its fleet, despite ongoing concerns about its contribution to space debris and its environmental impact.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized SpaceX to operate up to 12,000 satellites, while the company has plans to deploy as many as 30,000 additional satellites in the future. These ambitious goals aim to enhance global internet accessibility, particularly in remote and underserved areas.

Satellites in Orbit and Decommissioning

However, not all of the satellites launched remain operational. With a typical lifespan of about five years, many satellites have already been decommissioned and intentionally de-orbited to burn up in Earth's atmosphere. Estimates suggest that approximately 8,600 Starlink satellites are currently in orbit.

Even with its groundbreaking expansion, SpaceX faces criticism related to its role in the growing problem of space debris. The company’s activities have sparked debates about their potential long-term impact on Earth's atmosphere and the crowded orbital environment.
