Reports Suggest Starlink Systems Utilized in Russian Drone Operations
Russia is equipping drones with Starlink to extend range, evade jamming, and strike deeper into Ukraine and neighboring states.
Russia has reportedly been equipping its drones with Starlink satellite systems, allowing them to bypass Ukraine’s electronic defenses and extend their operational range, according to Ukrainian officials and military analysts. This development has raised concerns over the technology's role in intensifying the ongoing conflict.
Starlink Technology Enhancing Drone Capabilities
Serhii Beskrestnov, a military tech expert and adviser to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, revealed that Ukraine has documented "hundreds" of drone attacks where Russian drones were outfitted with Starlink terminals. Beskrestnov emphasized the devastating impact of these drones, stating: "(Attacks) not on military targets, but on peaceful rear and frontline cities. Including residential buildings. In fact, this is terrorism using modern peaceful communication technologies."
By integrating Starlink, Russian drones have gained immunity to Ukraine's GPS and radio signal jamming efforts. Previously, Russia relied on fiber optic cables to control drones, which, while resistant to electronic disruption, were limited by cable length. The use of Starlink enables drones to be operated remotely from within Russia, enhancing precision and extending their reach to up to 500 kilometers (310 miles). According to Beskrestnov, a Starlink-equipped BM-35 drone is capable of striking targets far into Ukrainian territory, with one notable attack striking civilian infrastructure in Dnipro.
Cost-Effective and Hard to Thwart
Starlink-equipped drones are not only effective but also cost-efficient. Beskrestnov noted that attaching a Starlink Mini terminal, priced between $250 and $500, makes these drones significantly cheaper than advanced alternatives costing tens of thousands of dollars. Additionally, their simplicity and real-time control capabilities make them difficult to intercept. Beskrestnov further explained: "It is impossible to suppress (them) with electronic warfare. It can only be physically shot down if an anti-aircraft drone sees it and shoots it down."
A recent deadly attack on a civilian train in eastern Ukraine, which killed five people, is suspected to have involved a Starlink-equipped Shahed drone. Beskrestnov pointed out the strike's precision, which suggests the use of advanced communication technology that outmaneuvered Ukraine's defenses.
Escalating Drone Warfare
Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov acknowledged the growing threat posed by Russian drones enhanced with Starlink technology. "The enemy is constantly improving its drones and attack tactics to achieve its goals. Every day, a new risk emerges", he stated. Fedorov highlighted that Russia deployed over 6,000 drones in the past month alone, a significant increase compared to the same period last year.
In response, Ukraine has reached out to SpaceX, the company behind Starlink, to explore solutions that would prevent Russia from exploiting the technology. Fedorov expressed gratitude toward SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and Elon Musk for their prompt attention to the issue and efforts to address it.
Broader Security Concerns
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) has raised alarms about the potential range of Starlink-enabled drones, noting that they could threaten locations across most of Ukraine, as well as parts of neighboring Moldova, Poland, Romania, and Lithuania.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian sanctions commissioner Vladyslav Vlasiuk criticized the effectiveness of international sanctions against Russia, pointing to the country’s ability to acquire Starlink systems through third-party nations despite restrictions. Musk himself responded to criticism recently, defending Starlink’s role as "the backbone of Ukraine military communications" but declined to comment directly on Russia's use of the technology.
As Russian forces increasingly rely on these enhanced drones, Ukraine faces mounting challenges in countering this evolving threat. With attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure escalating, the urgency to address the misuse of Starlink technology grows ever more pressing.
