FAA certifies Starlink-equipped United Airlines aircraft for inaugural flight
FAA certifies United's first mainline Starlink-equipped aircraft; first commercial flight planned 15 October.

United Airlines has reached a new milestone in inflight connectivity, with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certifying the first of its mainline aircraft equipped with Starlink. The certification clears the way for the inaugural commercial flight of this Boeing 737-800, now scheduled to depart from Newark/New York on October 15.
This development follows United’s earlier implementation of Starlink’s Wi-Fi services on its regional fleet. In May, United launched its first customer flight featuring Starlink onboard an Embraer 175 regional aircraft, marking the beginning of its collaboration with SpaceX. The airline had signed the industry’s largest agreement with SpaceX to bring the high-speed internet service to its passengers across both regional and mainline fleets.
Expanding Starlink connectivity
With the FAA’s approval of the Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) amendment for the Boeing 737-800, United is now able to expand the installation of Starlink to its mainline aircraft. The airline has already outfitted over half of its regional fleet with the service and is making swift progress in equipping larger planes to enhance passenger experience across its network.
Grant Milstead, United's Vice President of Digital Technology, shared his enthusiasm about the rollout. "Customers are loving the Starlink experience onboard our regional aircraft, and our first Starlink-equipped mainline aircraft will bring a superior inflight experience to even more people", he said. "We're working to install Starlink and offer game-changing inflight entertainment experiences like streaming services, shopping, gaming and more."
Looking ahead
As part of its commitment to elevating passenger amenities, United and SpaceX are continuing efforts to secure FAA certification for Starlink installation on all eligible aircraft types in the airline’s fleet. This broader deployment aims to provide seamless high-speed internet and entertainment options for MileagePlus members and other travelers.
The October 15 flight from Newark/New York will mark a significant step in United’s journey to redefine inflight connectivity and entertainment. With Starlink’s capabilities, the airline is poised to set a new standard in the industry.
